A cottage full of friends.

Recently, I escaped to Cornwall to see the sea and get some Southern lovin' from my friends back home. With my high tech throw-away camera I managed to get some lovely shots of people which I am using in my third year project.  Speaking of third year, a.k.a the stressful year of pure panic, the theme of my project is people and geometry. Random, I know.  However, they go surprisingly well together. In the following months I will post the outcomes of this year long journey.

Organic.

Finally, my Organic project. I found this project both challenging and fulfilling as I was encouraged to try new methods and push my skills further.
My inspiration came from the human body and how women show their femininity.

The above image is a piece of art I found in Vice magazine. I love the playful yet provocative portrayal of sex within an upper class series of scenarios.

Above shows my contextual inspiration. I wanted to create a contemporary and minimal design but without the room looking too bare.

Above are images of scans. I associated these with oil patterns and attempted to recreate it with the use of marble inks.

I became obsessed with lace. It's a material that I think exudes femininity and so spent days attempting to draw new lace patterns to fit in with the female form. Unfortunately I decided against using it in my final designs as I felt it made the overall design too busy.

Above I tested different compositions for the final design, looking for the right balance of negative and positive space.

The finished design! My choice of colour palette was to make the design unisex as well as calming, and something which you would want to lie under.

I am pleased with the end result and feel that I have managed to make a design which would appeal to the mass market without losing my style. One thing which is important to me is that when people see my work, they know that it is my work.

New Brief.

Brief: Each student is to produce a design for a duvet cover. The duvet cover measures 200 x 200cm with no repeat. Subject choices are: Mixed Media, Organic or Urban.

I have chosen Organic. Many people associate this subject with flowers in Spring time, a butterfly coming out of its chrysalis or pebbles shaped by the ferocious ocean, but not for me. When thinking of organic a concoction of bones, pigeon feathers, innards,  the human form and evolution instantly spring to mind.

Let the games begin...

Previous Work.

Having just posted my first ever post, I'm now thinking that I probably should have started with this, A selection of previous pieces of work... never mind!

Here, I attempted to physically create the varying emotions of the ocean. Using basic clay for the top sculpture, I designed it so that one side was showing the ferociousness of the sea, the other the calmness. Finishing it with a dip in a white ceramic glaze.

The bottom wall piece, again representing the ocean, was created with paper clay and then fired with blue glazes as well as a scattering of glass.

A project called Sampler Culture Clash where we were asked to somehow link to opposites together. I thought of Man vs. Machine and based my final image on the anatomical drawings of Vesalius and the film I, Robot. I visualised it as a piece of wall art for an electronics shop.

Here are two digital print projects. The top three images are from a project named Collections. I merged my own, trainers, with text defining what a museum is, (A place that essentially houses collections). Then creating layers to the images through abstract packaging material which would protect each piece.

The bottom two images are from a project named Visual Chaos. I started by looking at ducks (naturally), because when moving above water they look serene but under water their legs are manic. The same can be said for humans; waist upwards, we know what direction we are going and where our destination is. Our legs and feet however, are constantly dodging different obstacles. Be it other people, benches or litter.

Design and Individual Project.

When given the chance to create my own brief I decided to visualise the nursery rhyme Teddy Bear's Picnic. My aim was to create interior samples for the high end public sector. Using both digital and manual printing methods my samples were inspired by Tim Burton, Timorous Beasties and the film Watership Down. This I think is evident from the sinister twist I put on the well known children's rhyme.
